As someone who got into sewing fairly recently (around a year ago), and didn't want to spend a massive amount of money on a hobby I wasn't sure I'd continue, this is a great starter sewing machine. Personally, I have a lot of DIY projects and hobbies, and I'm never sure which one will really stick. This cheaper sewing machine lets me test out the waters, learn how to sew properly and by using it I also know what I want for my next sewing machine in its final form.

Brother's SM1704 Sewing Machine

Initial Thoughts

Right out of the box, it's super easy to set up, and the lightweight design means I can move it around my craft room without any hassle.

The machine is surprisingly sturdy despite its lightweight build, and it handles a variety of fabrics well. I've tried everything from cotton to denim, and it hasn't skipped a beat. Plus, the LED light definitely helps and I can see my work perfectly

The Machine

One of the best features is the built-in stitch selection dial. With just a simple turn, you can choose from 17 different stitches, which is plenty for most projects. Whether you're working on basic hems, decorative stitching, or even quilting, this machine has a stitch for it. The variety is fantastic for exploring different techniques without feeling overwhelmed.

I also love the automatic bobbin winding system—it takes the guesswork out of winding the bobbin, which can be a bit tricky at first. Just place the bobbin on the winder, follow the easy threading instructions, and let the machine do the rest. It's quick and efficient, so you can spend more time sewing and less time fiddling with setup.

What I find particularly useful is the free arm feature, which makes sewing cuffs, sleeves, and other small items a breeze. It also comes with an instructional DVD, which is a lifesaver for visual learners.

Verdict

Overall, the Brother SM1704 is a fantastic entry-level sewing machine. I generally sew 1-3 times and my projects vary. I use the machine to make lots of trousers and dresses, and I also use it to mend and repair older clothes or for DIY projects around the house, like making pillow cases or adjusting curtains. It's user-friendly, reliable, and packed with features that make sewing enjoyable and accessible for beginners. If you want to get into sewing and want a beginners sewing machine, I highly recommend you give this one a try. It's a cheaper sewing machine, but I don't think I will need to upgrade for another couple of years.
